How I Earned Two Slack Certifications in Two Days

Recently, I realized I had two Slack certification vouchers that were about to expire.

I had a decision to make. I could let them expire, or I could see what I could accomplish.

I had never taken two certification exams so close together, and I wasn’t sure I would pass either one. But even if I didn’t pass, I would gain firsthand experience with the questions, identify where I needed to study, and have the option of retaking the exams at the discounted price.

At the same time, I was already planning TrailScout’s Learning Hub.

I couldn’t find Slack Administrator or Slack Consultant practice exams that helped me reliably measure my readiness or identify the knowledge gaps I still needed to close. So I decided the Slack Administrator certification would become the inaugural exam for the Learning Hub, and I would be its first beta tester.

If the practice exams, flashcards, and study workflow helped me prepare for these certifications, I would know I was building something that could genuinely help other Salesforce professionals too.

The 30 Days to Slack Expert Challenge Paid Off

Last fall, I joined the community-led 30 Days to Slack Expert Challenge, committing to complete one new Slack Trailhead module every day for 30 days.

What made the challenge special wasn’t just the content. It was the community.

I had an incredible group of accountability partners. We kept each other motivated, celebrated milestones, and had fun learning together. At the end of the challenge, I was fortunate to win one of the certification vouchers that would eventually become part of this journey.

Although I wasn’t using Slack every day in my current role, the challenge, combined with my previous experience using Slack, gave me a solid foundation. When I began preparing for the certification exams almost nine months later, I recognized concepts, features, and terminology I had encountered during those 30 days.

Becoming TrailScout’s First Beta Tester

That foundation mattered when the vouchers’ approaching deadline turned TrailScout’s planned Learning Hub into something I could test on myself.

I knew I wanted the Learning Hub to include practice exams, flashcards, and direct links to official source material. Rather than waiting until everything was finished, I used the tools as I built them.

I created practice questions, reviewed flashcards, and followed the same study workflow I planned to offer future learners.

In other words, I became TrailScout’s first beta tester.

The first thing I needed to validate wasn’t whether I could build a large question bank. It was whether the questions could give me an honest measure of my readiness.

Good Practice Questions Are Hard to Write

I first recognized this problem months earlier while studying for my Salesforce Strategy Designer certification.

Like many people, I turned to AI to help me create practice exams. At first, the results seemed encouraging. I kept scoring 100%.

Then I stopped and asked myself why.

I’ve taken enough Salesforce certification exams to know that I don’t routinely score 100%. The practice questions simply weren’t challenging me the way a real certification exam would.

Many tested surface-level recall. The distractors were often easy to eliminate because they weren’t plausible solutions to the scenario. If you understood the subject at even a basic level, the correct answer was usually obvious.

That isn’t how most Salesforce certification exam questions are written. Several answers may seem plausible, and the challenge is identifying the best response to the specific scenario.

That kind of practice might feel reassuring, but it doesn’t provide an honest assessment of whether someone is ready to spend $200 on a certification exam.

Creating something better required much more than asking AI to generate questions. I refined prompts, reviewed and rewrote questions, strengthened distractors, and aligned the question bank with the topics and weighting in the official exam guide.

I also linked every question to official source material.

When I miss a question, I don’t just want to know the correct answer. I want to understand why it’s correct and why the other choices aren’t the best response to the scenario.

My goal wasn’t to create a practice exam where everyone could score 100%. It was to create one that helped learners earn the confidence that comes from being genuinely prepared.

Try the TrailScout Study Workflow

Rather than just describe the difference, here is a small sample of the workflow I used.

Start with this 10-question Slack Administrator sample exam. The questions are designed to give you a feel for TrailScout’s scenario-based questions, plausible distractors, explanations, and official source links.

A practice exam helps identify where the gaps are. The next step is reinforcing the concepts behind them.

These seven flashcards are a small sample from TrailScout’s Slack Administrator deck. They complement the practice exam by helping you review important concepts between full attempts.

That combination helped me prepare for the Slack Administrator exam. The second voucher presented a different challenge. I had only one day to prepare for the Slack Consultant exam.

Why I Decided to Take the Slack Consultant Exam

When I accepted the Slack Consultant voucher, I knew I would have very little time to use it before it expired.

I accepted it because there was still value in taking the exam, even if I wasn’t ready to pass. I would learn what the questions were like, identify areas where I needed to improve, and know what to expect if I needed to retake it.

I also recognized something about myself. I tend to over-prepare.

Sometimes I’m so focused on avoiding failure that I wait longer than necessary before taking an exam. This was an opportunity to challenge that mindset.

After completing the Administrator exam, I had only one day left to prepare for the Consultant exam. I also had to work that day. The study approach I had used for Administrator wasn’t going to fit the time I had available.

Finding Another Way to Study

By the time I finished work that evening, I didn’t have the energy to sit down and spend hours reading documentation.

I needed another way to study.

I’ve always been a strong auditory learner, but there aren’t many audio-based resources available for Salesforce or Slack certification preparation.

So I gathered the official source material I had already been studying and used NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) to create an audio discussion I could listen to during my commute, over lunch, or whenever I couldn’t sit in front of a computer.

It was exactly what I needed.

The audio didn’t replace reading the documentation, taking practice exams, or reviewing flashcards. It reinforced what I had already learned and gave me another opportunity to study during time that otherwise would have been lost.

What I Learned from the Consultant Exam

The Administrator exam gave me a strong foundation, but the Consultant exam required me to think differently.

The Administrator exam I took consisted entirely of single-answer multiple-choice questions. The Consultant exam was more varied. Some questions required one answer, others required two, and several required selecting three correct answers from six choices.

The Consultant exam also placed greater emphasis on familiarity with the Slack platform itself. It wasn’t always enough to understand what a feature did. You also needed to know where to find it or how to navigate to a particular setting.

I encountered questions involving user groups, channel permissions, DKIM, Slack Connect, and other administrative features where familiarity with the platform was just as important as understanding the underlying concepts.
